Transperineal Needle Template in Prostate Cancer Treatment

The transperineal needle template is a tool used for prostate cancer treatments cryotherapy and brachytherapy. In both brachytherapy and cryotherapy, the pelvic area is carefully mapped to ensure the needles will be correctly placed into the prostate gland. The transperineal needle template is customized to the arrangement of that patient’s organs. Transperineal means through the perineum. The patient is usually placed in the dorsal lithotomy position and the template sutured directly to the perineum. In permanent low dose brachytherapy and in cryotherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer, needles are then inserted through the template and percutaneously through the perineum. The transperineal needle template will also be attached to a stabilizing device.
